My days as a boat owner are done.

In late April Sea Zen sailed down False Creek, under the Burrard Bridge and across English Bay on her way to her new owners; a lovely couple from La Jolla.

I had many happy days on the water with Sea Zen and before her, AWOL. Ultimately I decided, that for me, sailing is something to be done as a couple - and I was no longer part of a couple. Besides which, I will earn more of a return with the capital involved in my investment account rather than sitting on the water.

Christening of Sea Zen in False Creek

Valerie was integral to the vision of Sea Zen and her imprint is seen and felt all through the vessel, but quite sadly she was not able to be there for Sea Zen's arrival.

She told Brian, more than once or twice that, “The thing I will miss most about not being here is I won’t get to see our new boat arrive.”

With sincere thanks to Linda Whatley for the beautiful production of this video.

In 2014, I bought a 43 foot Beneteau sailboat (AWOL) which we enjoyed for six years. We learned to sail; learned to take care of a boat; learned to live on a boat. We had some wonderful vacation trips on AWOL accompanied by Linda and Michael Whatley – our teachers, advisors and protectors on the water.

In 2020, we decided that the rigors of sailing were going to give way to what we hoped would be a more relaxed power boating experience.

Our plan was to moor the boat is Port Sidney Marina and spend weeks and weekends there. With Valerie gone I am now looking to find a moorage in False Creek so I have more immediate access.
